Officially opened to the public on July 2, 2022, to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the handover of Hong Kong, the Hong Kong Palace Museum is a world-class cultural landmark situated at the western tip of the West Kowloon Cultural District. The museum was established through a landmark collaborative partnership between the West Kowloon Cultural District Authority (WKCDA) and the Palace Museum in Beijing, financed by the Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust. It operates under a vital dual mission: to cultivate national cultural confidence and a deeper public appreciation for Chinese art, history, and civilization, while simultaneously serving as an East-meets-West center for international cultural exchange. Its foundational history is defined by a massive curation of more than 900 priceless, rarely-seen imperial artifacts, including classical paintings, exquisite ceramics, calligraphy, and courtly treasures. Housed in a striking, modern building designed by acclaimed local architect Rocco Yim, which reinterprets traditional Chinese spatial concepts through a contemporary lens, the HKPM blends ancient history with global narratives by regularly co-curating major cross-cultural exhibitions alongside leading institutions like the Louvre and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
