Officially opened to the public in 2021 after more than a decade of strategic planning, M+ is Asia's first global museum of contemporary visual culture, anchoring the waterfront of Hong Kong’s ambitious West Kowloon Cultural District. The massive institution was established as a statutory initiative by the Hong Kong Government via the West Kowloon Cultural District Authority (WKCDA), with its initial curatorial foundations famously fortified by a monumental 2012 donation of over 1,400 works from Swiss collector Dr. Uli Sigg. Under its core mission, M+ seeks to collect, exhibit, and interpret visual art, design, architecture, and moving images from the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, filtering global creative developments through a distinctly Asian lens and a local Hong Kong perspective. Housed in an iconic, award-winning inverted T-shaped building designed by legendary Swiss architecture firm Herzog & de Meuron, the museum features 33 expansive galleries alongside one of the world's largest LED facade screens illuminating Victoria Harbour. By seamlessly bridging local histories with international contemporary narratives, M+ stands alongside landmarks like London's Tate Modern and New York's MoMA as a premier global cultural crossroads.
