Officially opened in 2019 as a core pillar of The Mills revitalization project in Tsuen Wan, Centre for Heritage, Arts and Textile is Hong Kong's premier non-profit art institution dedicated to the intersection of textile heritage, contemporary art and community design. Operating under a distinct mission to weave creative experiences for everyone, the center invites diverse audiences to explore the history of Hong Kong's textile industry alongside global contemporary art practices. Its foundational history is physically and conceptually rooted in the former Nan Fung Cotton Mills, a once-bustling factory complex that spearheaded the city's manufacturing golden age in the mid-20th century, now beautifully transformed by Baroque on Lamma and Thomas Chow Architects into a modern creative hub. The multi-gallery venue features a permanent exhibition detailing Hong Kong's industrial past, complete with restored historical machinery, alongside major temporary exhibitions that invite international contemporary artists, designers, and artisans to challenge traditional textile practices. By running a lively program of hands-on spinning, weaving, and natural dyeing workshops alongside its prestigious artist residency program, CHAT successfully bridges industrial nostalgia with progressive artistic innovation.
