Officially opened in 2019 as the gateway to the West Kowloon Cultural District, the Xiqu Centre is a world-class cultural landmark dedicated to preserving, promoting, and advancing the heritage of xiqu (traditional Chinese opera), with a specific focus on Cantonese opera. Designed by Revery Architecture and Ronald Lu & Partners, the building features a striking contemporary facade of over 10,000 curved aluminum fins resembling parted stage curtains, which frame a breeze-filled public plaza at ground level. Its structural masterpiece is the 1,100-seat Grand Theatre, which is suspended 30 meters in the air to isolate the auditorium from the vibrations of the underground MTR lines. Alongside the main hall, the center houses the intimate 200-seat Tea House Theatre—where audiences can enjoy traditional tea and dim sum during narrator-guided performances—as well as dedicated seminar halls and studios, successfully bridging ancient performing traditions with cutting-edge civic architecture to engage new generations of theatergoers.
