Tai Kwun, which translates literally to "Big Station" in Cantonese, is Hong Kong's largest heritage revitalization project. Situated on Hollywood Road in Central, the site comprises three declared monuments: the former Central Police Station, the Central Magistracy, and Victoria Prison. This extensive, walled compound was originally established by the British colonial government in the mid-nineteenth century as a highly centralized system of law enforcement, justice, and incarceration. In 2008, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government partnered with The Hong Kong Jockey Club in a non-profit capacity to preserve and revitalize the historic complex, which officially opened to the public in 2018. The institution’s mission is to operate as a vibrant center for heritage and contemporary art, enriching the cultural life of Hong Kong by bridging the city's past with its creative future.
