Established in 1975 through the split of the City Museum and Art Gallery, the Hong Kong Museum of History is the city's foremost institution dedicated to preserving and exhibiting the cultural heritage of Hong Kong and South China, managed by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department. Operating under the mission to collect, preserve, and study historical objects and archives, the museum aims to foster community identity and a deeper public appreciation for the unique, multi-layered history of the region. Originally located in Star House in Tsim Sha Tsui before moving to a temporary site in Kowloon Park, the museum finally relocated in 1998 to its current complex in Tsim Sha Tsui East, designed by P&T Architects and Engineers to harmoniously share a modern, post-modernist campus with the neighboring Hong Kong Science Museum. In its exhibition history, the museum was long celebrated for its iconic permanent exhibition, "The Hong Kong Story," a massive 8-gallery showcase spanning 400 million years of natural history, local folklore, and modern development, which has since transitioned into an extensive, comprehensive revamp to tell the city's evolution through updated multimedia, interactive technology, and curated artifacts spanning from prehistoric times to the modern era.
