Established in 2008 in the historic neighborhood of Shek Kip Mei, the Jockey Club Creative Arts Centre (JCCAC) is a pioneering multi-disciplinary artist village and arts center housed in a beautifully converted, nine-story former flatted factory building. Originally built in 1977 to home local "cottage" light industries and the booming garment trade of the era, the factory fell into disuse in the 1990s and sat vacant before undergoing a landmark revitalization project, marking Hong Kong's very first major adaptive reuse initiative to transform a decommissioned industrial site into a dedicated creative hub. The center was established through a strategic partnership between the Hong Kong Arts Development Council (HKADC), the Hong Kong Arts Centre (HKAC), and the Hong Kong Government, funded by a generous donation from the Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust and managed by a self-financed subsidiary of Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU). Operating with a core mission to support the development of local creative talents and democratize arts and culture within the community, JCCAC currently provides affordable studio spaces for nearly 140 resident artists and arts groups spanning visual, performing, and applied arts. Combining raw, concrete 1970s industrial aesthetics with contemporary communal galleries, a Black Box Theatre, craft shops, and public programming, the center serves as a dynamic, accessible bridge where the everyday public can experience and interact with the heartbeat of Hong Kong’s grassroots creative scene.
