Founded in Hong Kong in 1974 by Fred Scholle, Galerie du Monde (now widely known as gdm) holds the prestigious distinction of being the city's longest-running contemporary art gallery. Launching at a time when Hong Kong's commercial art scene was virtually non-existent, the gallery became a foundational pillar of the local creative ecosystem. Based in the Ruttonjee Centre on Duddell Street in Central, the gallery marked its landmark 50th anniversary in late 2024 by launching its first international branch in Taipei, Taiwan. Over its five-decade history, gdm has dedicated itself to nurturing and celebrating modern and contemporary art with a distinct global perspective. Historically, the gallery carved out a vital niche by championing pioneering Chinese modern masterworks, particularly mid-century abstract movements and revolutionary contemporary ink art from Hong Kong, Taiwan, and mainland China. Today, the gallery continues to evolve, representing a diverse roster of international artists and actively supporting diaspora and underrepresented creators whose works engage with complex conceptual practices and cultural identity. Through its highly curated exhibitions, academic publications, and international art fair presence, gdm remains a vital bridge connecting pioneering regional art movements with global audiences.
