Asia Art Archive operates as a vital intellectual sanctuary dedicated to documenting and preserving the rich history of contemporary art across Asia. Founded at the turn of the millennium by Claire Hsu and Johnson Chang Tsong-zung, this pioneering non-profit organization was born out of an urgent need to counter Western-centric art narratives by systematically recording the region’s creative lineages. Operating under the guiding conviction that art is a fundamental form of shared knowledge, the institution does not collect physical gallery masterpieces, but instead focuses on gathering the valuable, often ephemeral paper trails of regional creativity. The archive's physical home, beautifully reimagined by the local design firm LAAB Architects, seamlessly blends the scholarly focus of a world-class research library with the warm, open atmosphere of a community reading room. Beyond these printed volumes, the team diligently preserves and digitizes primary sources making valuable historical sketches, slides, and correspondence globally accessible. Through research grants, residencies, and public workshops, the archive actively breathes new life into these historical materials, transforming static paper records into catalysts for contemporary global dialogue.
