Empty Gallery

Gallery · Hong Kong

Empty Gallery was founded in 2015 by collector Stephen Cheng, who envisioned an experimental and unconventional space where artists could feel free to create without focusing solely on sales. The very name of the gallery refers to the idea of an "empty" space, far removed from traditional commercial circuits. The gallery deviates from the traditional art world, starting with its physical space; instead of using the classic "White Cube" model, it has become famous for its "Black Cube" — a space immersed in darkness, designed specifically to enhance video art, experimental cinema, and sound performances. The gallery operates much like an institutional cultural centre, with the goal of fuelling the thriving East Asian art scene outside the traditional boundaries of the art market.
