The Fringe Club is a legendary non-profit contemporary arts center established in Hong Kong in 1984 by Benny Chia. The organization found its permanent home within the brick-and-stucco South Block of the Old Dairy Farm Depot, a stunning Grade I historic cold storage warehouse dating back to 1892. Originally acquired as a temporary space to host the 1984 Hong Kong Festival Fringe, the disused, colonial-era structure was transformed through a frantic, volunteer-led effort into a vibrant multi-purpose cultural hub. Over the decades, this landmark has undergone extensive conservation work—earning the first-ever Hong Kong Heritage Award in 2001—to seamlessly transition from an industrial ice house into one of the city's most beloved artistic safe havens. The core mission of the Fringe Club is to provide an open, accessible platform that nurtures emerging and professional artists while promoting Hong Kong’s creative voices on the global stage. Operating under a historic policy of open access, the club has long been a bastion for freedom of expression, allowing creators to show their work without a formal selection process. Its physical space houses versatile venues, including the Anita Chan Lai-ling Gallery, the theatrical Underground Theatre, and the iconic Fringe Dairy jazz bar. The artistic program is highly diverse, spanning avant-garde theater, live music, poetry readings, physical dance, and contemporary art exhibitions, highlighted by the revival of its renowned Hong Kong Fringe Festival to spotlight non-mainstream talent from across the region.
