Completed and opened to the public in 2016, the Arts Pavilion holds a historic legacy as the very first permanent architectural venue to be unveiled within the waterfront Art Park of the West Kowloon Cultural District (WestK). The building was constructed under the governance of the West Kowloon Cultural District Authority (WKCDA) following an anonymous international design competition. The winning commission was awarded to a young, energetic team of Hong Kong-born architects: Vincent Pang, Tynnon Chow and Lisa Cheung. Designed under a core mission to provide a quiet respite from chaotic urban life, the structure acts as a "Floating Art Platform". Its genius architectural envelope features mirrored external walls that camouflage the building, seamlessly reflecting the surrounding greenery and Victoria Harbour while isolating its internal galleries from city noise. In its institutional history, the pavilion served as the primary, critical home for all M+ museum exhibitions and visual culture programs during the run-up to the official opening of the main M+ museum building. Following the museum’s expansion, the pavilion transitioned into its long-term purpose: operating as a flexible, column-free, and light-filled canvas dedicated to independent artists, local organizations, and cross-disciplinary creators to stage intimate, world-class exhibitions against the iconic backdrop of the Hong Kong skyline.
