The Asia Society Hong Kong Center is a premier cultural and intellectual hub seamlessly built into a lush, forested hillside in Admiralty. The parent organization was originally established in New York in 1956 by philanthropist John D. Rockefeller 3rd to foster global understanding of Asia, while the Hong Kong Center was founded in 1990 by a group of local community leaders led by Sir Q.W. Lee. Its mission is to navigate shared futures for Asia and the world by promoting mutual understanding and collaboration across arts, culture, business, and policy. The center is uniquely housed in the Former Explosives Magazine of the old British Victoria Barracks—a compound of Grade I historic military buildings constructed between 1843 and 1907. Reimagined by architects Tod Williams and Billie Tsien and opened in 2012, the site brilliantly masterclasses adaptive reuse, transforming blast-fortified munitions storage units into the world-class Chantal Miller Gallery and an intimate performance theater. Today, it actively serves the community as an architectural marvel that bridges colonial military history with vibrant, contemporary global dialogue.
