This August, SC Gallery proudly presents the solo exhibition of Joshua Hon Shing Ho, titled “The Rendering of Night and Flower”. The artist’s latest art collection expands his dark-academia artistic style into exploring vulnerable storytelling and nostalgic memories through delineating Wildflowers. Hon began the series amidst navigating a prolonged illness and recovery in Canada. Enduring the uncertain times, the artist channeled this struggle onto canvas, where his exploration of ethereality intersected with memory and distance.This collection “The Rendering of Night and Flower” will be shown from August 22 to October 3, 2026. Since the beginning of his career, Joshua Hon (b. 1994) has been known for his monochromatic visionary landscapes. He is intrigued by the mystical and folkloric atmosphere of nature nightscapes, perceiving it as a liminal space for his imagination and contemplation. Contrary to darkness, Hon finds that the dim and stubborn vitality of wildflowers serves as a symbol of his convalescence. “I came to be aware of the limitations and vulnerability of the human body. ” said Hon. Since then, Hon has made wildflowers in darkness his artistic inspiration to explore the intersection of memory, distance, sensory experience, and imagination. The exhibition comprises 14 artworks that indirectly depict Hong Kong’s nature. The noir style artworks are constructed simply through light and shadow. They highlight his delicate drawing techniques in illustrating luminous botany, juxtaposed with a suppressed atmosphere. The ambiguous boundaries explore a liminal time and space with wildflowers transforming into the embodiments of ethereal beauty and spirituality. Although the series is visually complex, the creation process is the most straightforward to Hon. The artist studies the subject through mapping out the interplay between light and shadow on Hong Kong’s wildflower montages or sketches.
