Xun Wang's Sculptures

Time and Memory in Bronze

Taiwanese-American sculptor Xun Wang turns bronze into a way of holding time. Before moving into fine art, Wang worked in Hollywood special effects, using digital modelling and animation tools for film. Today, he brings that same technology into sculpture, creating bronze works that seem to move even while standing still. Wang does not treat sculpture as a frozen moment. Instead, he layers many points in time into one form. A step, a turn, or a pause becomes a sequence of movement captured in bronze. The result feels less like a statue and more like motion made solid. At the centre of his practice is his ongoing Space in Time series. These works act like memory capsules, preserving small human gestures before they disappear. By mapping micro-movements through 3D animation software, Wang turns time into structure. Past, present, and future are not separate in his work. They flow together. This idea becomes especially powerful when his sculptures are shown in historic spaces. In one major solo exhibition, Wang placed his digitally designed bronze figures inside the Taiwan Fu Confucian Examination Hall in Taichung, a Qing Dynasty landmark. The contrast between ancient architecture and futuristic technique deepened the feeling that time is never truly separate. Several key works show how Wang builds this language. First Step from 2025 captures the uncertain balance of a baby learning to walk. Instead of showing one clear movement, Wang layers every wobble, shift, and effort into a single bronze form. Turning Around from 2020 uses sweeping curves to suggest the force of a body changing direction. It feels both physical and emotional, like a moment of decision made visible. In Seeking, blue and green patinas ripple across the bronze surface, giving the work the feeling of water, memory, and quiet drift. By combining Hollywood digital tools with the permanence of bronze, Xun Wang gives sculpture a new sense of time. His works ask viewers to slow down and notice how every…
