Shanghai-based artist Qiu Anxiong presents Bearing the Unseen at Pearl Lam Projects in Central, Hong Kong. The exhibition brings together Chinese ink painting, animation, and digital media to explore artificial intelligence, industrial life, and ecological collapse. On view until May 30, 2026, the show connects traditional Daoist ideas with today’s technology-driven world. Rather than treating nature and technology as separate, Qiu places them in tension, asking where humanity now stands within a changing planet. Qiu is known for blending classical Chinese ink traditions with contemporary moving image and digital work. In Bearing the Unseen, he uses mythology, landscape, and animal imagery to reflect on the damage caused by industrial progress and artificial systems. Animals appear as quiet witnesses, watching a world shaped and destabilised by human ambition. The exhibition unfolds through three emotional shifts. It begins with stillness, offering a sense of calm away from the noise of modern life. It then moves into sharper criticism of the digital age, with works that question how smartphones, algorithms, and AI affect memory, attention, and identity. The final part looks beyond human-centred thinking. Here, Qiu places human anxiety against the larger rhythms of nature, suggesting that the world does not revolve around us alone. A key work, Listening to the Qin—Deerfield, brings together ink aesthetics and digital performance, creating a quiet tension between the organic and the artificial. Rooted in Daoist philosophy, Bearing the Unseen reflects on balance, impermanence, and interconnection. It does not present technology as simply good or bad. Instead, it shows modern life as unstable, constantly shifting, and deeply connected to ecological consequence. At its strongest, the exhibition feels like a meditation.
