Inside the World of Fallen Angels at Hauser & Wirth Hong Kong
Internationally acclaimed artist Nicole Eisenman presents Fallen Angels at Hauser & Wirth Hong Kong, offering a quieter, more intimate side of her practice. Known for large, crowded paintings filled with social tension and theatrical energy, Eisenman takes a different approach here. The exhibition features eleven easel-sized paintings and three sculptures, bringing the viewer closer to smaller, more psychologically charged scenes. Instead of sweeping narratives, Fallen Angels focuses on the emotional weight of everyday life. The works move through familiar spaces: the home, the workplace, and the beach. These are places we usually associate with routine, labour, or escape, but Eisenman makes them feel strangely connected. In these paintings, rest does not feel fully restful. Work seems to follow the figures home. Even the beach carries a sense of heaviness. The boundaries between private life and professional life begin to blur, creating a mood that feels both ordinary and uneasy. The figures do not perform grand gestures. They linger, sit, wait, and endure. Time feels slow, almost stuck. Through this stillness, Eisenman captures something deeply familiar about contemporary life: the feeling of moving through repeated tasks while carrying invisible emotional weight. The sculptures add another layer to the exhibition. Eisenman includes a table and chair taken from her own studio, placing the objects of labour inside the gallery. It is a simple gesture, but a powerful one. It asks where work ends and life begins, especially for artists and anyone whose identity is tied to what they produce.
