‘Seu’ at Can Garita in Ibiza
Barcelona-born contemporary painter Miriam Dema, a 2017 Fine Arts graduate from the University of Barcelona, is currently showcasing her solo exhibition "Sue" at Can Garita in Sant Llorenç de Balàfia, Ibiza. Running from June 23rd to August 19th, 2026, "Sue", meaning "have a seat" in Catalan, Miriam’s native language, perfectly captures the essence of her paintings. Many works feature chairs, tables, and table settings, reimagining classic still life through her bright, bold style. Her compositions highlight vibrant colours, calming gingham and checkered tablecloths, and arrangements of fruits, flowers, bottles, and glasses. Strong shafts of light and sharp shadows bring a summery, sunlit atmosphere that invites viewers into her vivid world. Her inspiration is drawn from people and interpersonal interaction, with coloured fruits used as metaphors and the ideas of communal dining to bring these ideas together in beautiful compositions. Dema works with acrylic and oil stick, whose strong textures and childlike nature help compose the loose and free nature of her pieces. Many of the works in "Sue" were created during her four-week residency at Las Cicadas artist residency in Ibiza in the winter of 2024, where she was one of five artists working there. Miriam Dema is notably the first Las Cicadas alumnus to hold a solo exhibition at Can Garita. Both the residency and the gallery were founded by curator Sarah Suco Torres. Can Garita, established in 2023, found its permanent home in a former warehouse in Sant Llorenç in 2026, becoming a vibrant hub for contemporary art in Ibiza.
