Lines of EVANGELION at INCUBASE Arena Hong Kong
If you think animation is only about colour, polish, and digital effects, Lines of EVANGELION at INCUBASE Arena Hong Kong offers a different view. Set in Mong Kok, the exhibition strips the anime back to its foundation: the line. Instead of focusing on spectacle, the show highlights the hand-drawn craft behind Neon Genesis Evangelion, one of the most influential anime series of all time. Marking its 30-year legacy, the exhibition removes the finished colour and brings attention to outlines, structure, movement, and form. Inside INCUBASE Arena, visitors can see more than 500 rare original keyframes, hand-drawn animation cels, and background drafts. The display reveals the geometry of the Evas, the silhouettes of the pilots, and the sharp typography associated with Hideaki Anno’s visual world. What makes the exhibition special is how close it brings you to the making of animation. Pencil marks, correction notes, and red-and-blue editorial lines are still visible on some works. These details make the process feel human, precise, and alive. Every drawing shows how movement was built by hand before it ever reached the screen. The exhibition also includes Hong Kong-exclusive elements. A 1:1 neon-lit streetscape places the five Eva pilots in a stylised city setting, dressed in contemporary streetwear. There is also a large Unit-01 photo wall and interactive drawers where visitors can open compartments to discover hidden draft sheets. _ Lines of EVANGELION_ balances archive and fan experience. It gives longtime fans a closer look at the anime’s production history while offering newcomers a clear way to understand why its visual language still matters.
