The Substance of Mirage Exhibition at Ora-Ora Gallery
The Substance of Mirage at Ora-Ora Gallery in Tai Kwun presents new work by Jiang Heng, looking at the tension between fast consumer culture and the values that last over time. On view until July 4, 2026, the exhibition reflects on southern China’s rapid material growth while asking what remains meaningful in a world driven by speed, production, and image. Rather than making a loud statement, Jiang slows things down. His work invites viewers to look carefully at surfaces, materials, and the ways identity is shaped, sold, and broken apart. In the Artificial Hairs series, Jiang paints brightly coloured wigs and synthetic hair with striking realism. At first, the works feel glossy and seductive, almost like luxury advertising. But hair carries deeper meaning. Across many cultures, including ancient Chinese and Han traditions, hair has long been connected to heritage, family, and social identity. By turning this symbol into something artificial and purchasable, Jiang points to a shift in how identity is understood today. What was once inherited can now be styled, customized, bought, and replaced. The paintings are beautiful, but their shine also suggests disposability. The exhibition moves into a different rhythm with I Divided My Body Into Pixels For You. In this series, Jiang uses layered wood, modular forms, and bold colour to break human profiles into pixel-like shapes. The works feel physical, but they also speak to the digital world, where bodies and memories are often flattened into images, profiles, and data. From one angle, the fragmented pieces may come together. From another, they fall apart. Visitors have to move around the work to rebuild the image in their own eyes.
