"Lift the Veil" at The Gagosian Hong Kong
For over five decades, James Turrell has been redefining sight and perception through his innovative use of light and installation art. The current exhibition, "Lift the Veil," held at the upstairs exhibition space in the Gagosian Hong Kong, presents a captivating range of Turrell’s works. Visitors can explore his infamous "Glassworks", holograms, prints, models, and photographs, alongside plans of his monumental architectural project, "The Roden Crater", a work integrated into a 400,000-year-old dormant volcano. The exhibition showcases maquettes of "The Roden Crater", site plans, and photographs of location-specific pieces, alongside Turrell’s famous Glassworks and projection installations. This thoughtfully curated show offers a comprehensive introduction to Turrell’s groundbreaking work in a stunning setting. His "Skyspaces" are architectural rooms that manipulate both natural and artificial light. Inviting viewers to experience heightened sensory awareness. Construction and fundraising for "The Roden Crater" have been ongoing since the 1970s, with future opening dates anticipated. Featuring 21 interconnected viewing spaces, "The Roden Crater" invites visitors to contemplate space, time, and light through a unique architectural lens. The whole exhibition space is shrouded in shadow; the glow of Turrell's Glassworks seeps around corners and fills the corridor with an ever-shifting aura and light. It fills the viewer with a sense of intrigue and curiosity. This show features three Glassworks installed in uniquely shaped apertures in the wall, where slow fades and pulses of light draw viewers into Turrell’s world of colour and light. The viewer's perception of the environment changes as the changing brightness and colour reflecting onto the walls take you through a program of senses and awareness.
