Transporting us to childhood
A 15-minute drive from the Cotai Strip in Macao, the Macao Museum of Art opened Echo The Wind Wanderer, developed by artist Ekokaxi Wang. The works have a deeply childlike and whimsical feel as you wander through Wang's world. They describe this show as stepping through a portal and being transported to an alternate universe where all the senses are hers to rediscover. Comprising 4 parts, this show houses a large collection of Wang's sculpture pieces as well as drawings and selected video works. Their works, covered in patterns and doused with bright colour, to me resemble microscopic images of viruses and microorganisms but reimagined with playful curves, eye-catching colours and plant-like petals and vines. In the first section, "Echo's Cabinet Of Curiosities" , we are taken to the beginnings of Echo, and Wang's creation of these characters. We pass through a room that has furniture that resembles a pre-school; shelves containing drawings and wire-scale models line the walls, paintings,sketches and drawings nailed up. Nearer the centre, boxes are stacked, filled with plush toys and more sculptures, some of which are hidden in cubby holes as you explore around the space. Filling you with childlike curiosity. Further from this is "Re-Coding Macao", a bright room filled with plush building blocks spread across the floor. This interactive piece uses everyday shapes and symbols, welcoming all ages into an interactive play area to build and explore, becoming the creator of your own reality. I would definitely recommend this to families and young kids, as it is essentially a soft play park with bright colours, easy shapes and soft blocks. On the other side of the exhibition space, we are instructed to enter the mouth into "Aquarium Adventures" with bright pink walls patterned with a rib cage and spine.
