“East-West Contemplation” Celebrates the Legacy of Mio Pang Fei (Macao)
There are places that naturally feel like a meeting point, where cultures don’t just coexist, they actually trade ideas. Macao is one of those rare crossroads, and it’s the perfect setting for East-West Contemplation: A Retrospective of Mio Pang Fei at the Macao Museum of Art. Hosted by the museum, this retrospective is a fitting tribute to the late pioneer Mio Pang Fei (1936–2020). More than a “look back,” it’s an exhibition that focuses on how Mio helped reshape contemporary Chinese art by building an unapologetic bridge between Eastern tradition and Western modernism—without flattening either side. At the center of the show is Mio’s influential concept of “Neo-Orientalism.” It grew out of a deep foundation in classical Chinese calligraphy alongside Western oil painting.
