Sarah Suco Torres' Gallery Redefining Contemporary Art in Ibiza
Sarah Suco Torres, a Belgium-born designer and curator, began her career in prestigious galleries worldwide, including Perrotin, before relocating to Ibiza. Captivated by Ibiza's vibrant culture and unique architecture, she founded the Can Gartia Gallery and co-founded the Las Cicidas Artist Residency, blending local influences with her passion for contemporary art to create one-of-a-kind experiences Launched in 2023, Can Gartia started in a traditional “caseta de varadero,” a classic Ibiza fishing hut. This setting immersed the gallery in the island's urban pulse, redefining communal and working spaces by integrating contemporary art into traditional architectural environments. This was a deliberate departure from the conventional “white cube” gallery concept. The gallery's first show, Kaleidoscopes, was a solo exhibition by Grason Ratowsky exploring the interaction between communal and private spaces. By 2026, Can Gartia secured a permanent location with the help of Ibiza Interiors in a traditional Ibiza warehouse. This unique venue beautifully contrasts contemporary art with Ibiza’s rich architectural heritage, offering visitors a captivating cultural experience. Currently, Can Gartia is hosting Sue, a solo show by Spanish artist Miriam Dema, running through July and August. Can Gartia shares a long-standing collaboration with the CAN Art Fair Ibiza, working closely to attract global collectors. The gallery’s openings in 2023 and 2026 were strategically timed to coincide with CAN's presence on the island. Can Gartia is also a key feature in CAN Ibiza’s off-grid recommendations for collectors and participated with a booth in the main pavilion in 2026. Torres’s other venture, Las Cicidas, is an artist residency program situated in a beautifully restored 500-year-old farmhouse.
